You’ve seen it before. That look in their eyes that is full of rage. Their eyes look back at you and you no longer see the person you once knew. They give you a death stare, and you feel like they may actually attack. And then you realize how dark their eyes actually look, as if their eyes are black. It sends shivers down your spine. All of a sudden, you sense that there is danger.
Their stare is full of contempt and hatred. They have an intense and focused gaze on you, giving that eerie and unsettling feeling that something terrible might actually happen. The truth is, this can often be a sign that you are actually in danger. This is known as the “narcissists stare”. It feels as though Satan himself is looking right at you, as though their looks could kill.
This is something very common among narcissists and it leaves their victims in fear. There is actually a scientific reason for this. When a narcissist gets triggered, their nervous system goes into fight or flight. However, narcissists tend to want to fight. This causes dilating of their pupils. This can be seen in predators before they attack, and narcissists are looking to attack.
The dilated pupil gives the illusion that you are looking into their dark soul. The narcissist is full of contempt, anger, and rage and they need to project it onto someone. Who better than their victim? They cannot look internally at their own pain, so they take that pain wanting so desperately to give it to someone else. You will especially see this when the mask starts to slip or when they fear exposure.
The abuse starts to reveal itself and you begin to realize what you have actually been through. The anger, projection, and pain they caused is real. Once you see it in their eyes, you cannot unseen it. It will haunt you forever knowing how much hatred they actually have for you. You begin to understand who they actually are and what they actually did. You begin to realize what it was: abuse.
You start seeing them for who they are. A person who purposely tries to make you feel like you were crazy by all their lies and deceit. You start to remember all the words they said to you that cut so deep, that made you feel like you were worthless. You start to realize you actually never did know them, that the person you thought they were didn’t exist because the person standing before you scares the shit out of you. This isn’t the person you fell in love with. They are someone who still wants to hurt you. Who still wants you to pay for seeing through them.
In their eyes you see the lack of empathy. The dark soul who was willing to hurt you to the point that that broke you into a million pieces. They don’t care what they did to you. They don’t care what they continue to do to you. And while you look into their eyes, you see the darkness that they tried to hide. Their eyes will never look the same to you. Once you see them for who they are, there is no going back to that kind person you thought they were. You see the emptiness inside them. You see the soulless person who was all too willing to abuse you and you know that things will never be the same again.
Seeing the person you loved so much turn into someone you will never know again is painful. It’s confusing and you can no longer remember the good times. You wonder if they were ever real. You wonder if they always hated you so much because how can you hurt someone you once claimed to have loved?
The black eyes are telling you that it’s time for you to walk away if you haven’t already. It’s time for you to understand that if you try to stay, there will be more destruction, more pain, more abuse. Black eyes and a dark soul will never be what you need or what you deserve.
